Jurgen Klinsmann will be without DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco for Wednesday's international friendly with Mexico.

The pair's domestic club Puebla have refused a request to release the players for the game in Phoenix.

US head coach Klinsmann is less than impressed, but will not be calling up additional players to his squad, which is now comprised of 20 names.

"We are very disappointed in the decision by Puebla," he said.

"When the match was scheduled, it was with the spirit that both teams would have access to their domestic-based players for what is a very important game for those competing for spots in the World Cup.

"Both MLS and most clubs in Liga MX honoured that idea. While we understand their position, it's a huge opportunity lost for DaMarcus and Michael and doesn't contribute to the continuation of this respected rivalry."

With Wednesday's game the first of four friendlies for Klinsmann's side before their opening World Cup match against Ghana on June 16, the German knows that time is running out for his players to show their worth.

The US, who will be without all of their European-based stars with the exception of Bayern Munich forward Julian Green, were comfortable in qualifying for the tournament in Brazil later this year, finishing top of the final CONCACAF section with seven wins from 10 matches.

Klinsmann, who appointed compatriot Berti Vogts as a special advisor on Sunday, got the better of the Mexicans in qualifying, drawing 0-0 in the Azteca Stadium before goals from Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan earned a 2-0 success at home.

After a mixed qualifying campaign in which Mexico failed to qualify automatically for the finals in Brazil, head coach Jose Manuel de la Torre lost his job, and what followed was a period of serious instability.

Both Luis Fernando Tena and Victor Manuel Vucetich came and went in a short space of time, with current boss Miguel Herrera being appointed on an interim basis for the intercontinental play-off with New Zealand.

Herrera was an immediate success as Mexico thrashed their opponents 9-3 over two legs and he was subsequently given the job on a permanent basis as the Mexican Football Federation looked to belatedly create a feeling of continuity ahead of the World Cup.

Herrera has named an 18-man party for Wednesday's friendly, comprised entirely of players from Mexico's domestic league, although Jose Juan Vazquez and Oribe Peralta have withdrawn over respective visa and personal problems.

Set to enter the first of four international friendlies prior to beginning play at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the United States men’s national soccer team continues to make final preparations before a highly-anticipated showdown with rival Mexico. USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann – who has been at the helm of the national squad since 2011 – was originally planning to play the match with a roster of 22 but after Liga MX affiliate Puebla declined to release American talents DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco for the April 2 showdown at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Klinsmann and company will now only have the services of 20 players.

“We got notice from Puebla that they don’t release DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco, which we’d planned on and we are very angry, very angry about this because the Mexican clubs release all their players for this very prestigious friendly,” he told Univision in a recent interview. “We are very disappointed in the decision by Puebla. When the match was scheduled, it was with the spirit that both teams would have access to their domestic-based players for what is a very important game for those competing for spots in the World Cup. Both MLS and most clubs in Liga MX honored that idea.”

Despite the loss of the veteran international figures, Klinsmann’s side will still partake in the match with a two-man roster advantage over El Tri, who will play with a slate of just 18 talents. Comprised entirely of players from the Mexican domestic league, first-year head coach Miguel Herrera – who has enjoyed his fair amount of success since taking over the Mexican National team on a full-time basis in December of 2013 – hopes to utilize the home grown talent in the best way possible against an American squad that possesses the ability to play high-end soccer on both ends of the pitch.

Excited about the upcoming friendly, Herrera said in a recent interview that pre-World Cup matches serve as final opportunities for his club to add confidence in the hopes that strong play heading into Brazil will lead El Tri to a strong run at the summer tournament, something that hasn’t been the case in recent time. Reaching the final eight is one of the goals El Piojo would like to achieve as well.

Miguel Herrera El Tri El Tri boss Miguel Herrera hopes to lead his side to a strong run at the upcoming World Cup.

“What I’ve said is that if I don’t go to the World Cup thinking about winning it, then I might as well just go along as an extra, an outsider,” he said to FIFA.com when asked about his feeling on Mexico’s World Cup chances. “And that’s not for Mexico. We’re entitled to be excited and to aim to become world champions. We’ve got a good infrastructure and good players so why shouldn’t we think that way? With our history, it’s natural that we should think about the quarter-finals, and if we get past that stage then people will be happy no matter what. That’s the standard that the national FA has set for me, though. We’re going to make the last eight and then we’ll see who can stop us. We’ve only done it once in our history and we want to do it again.”

When and where: The international exhibition match kicks-off from Estadio Azteca in Mexico City at 8 p.m. ET. Live coverage will be provided by ESPN2, with a live stream available on ESPN3.

Preview: After the euphoria of claiming Olympic gold, Mexico's senior side will be looking to build on the huge momentum surrounding the country's soccer as they take on bitter local rivals the United States at the Azteca.

The country's recent success means there is sure to be a phenomenal atmosphere at the home of Mexican soccer. Having won the Under-17 World Cup last year as well as the Gold Cup-with a 4-2 victory in the final over the U.S.-Mexico is riding the crest of a wave that sees them as one of the leading nations in the world.

While there were some senior names present as Mexico capped a fine tournament by defeating Brazil in the Olympic final, the competition largely again showcased the depth in quality that Mexican soccer now possesses.

Against the U.S., El Tri will welcome some of the country's leading stars back into the international fold. Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is expected to lead the line, while Andres Guardado and Guillermo Ochoa should also appear.

Every player on show for Mexico will be desperate to avoid being in the team that relinquishes the proud record of never having lost to the U.S. on home soil.

That El Tri have won all but one of the 24 contests played between the two sides in Mexico illustrates the difficulty that the U.S. have had over the years.

"We're all aware of that," said U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu, according to the U.S. Soccer website. "It's part and parcel of this fixture and it's something we get excited for. It's going to be a crazy environment. It's one of the biggest games for us and we use that as our own personal motivation. If we get a win here, it's a big deal for us and that's what we're all looking to do on Wednesday night."

While ending their ignominious record is motivation enough for the U.S. squad traveling to Mexico City, there will also be a desire to prove that they are not being left behind in international soccer terms by their neighbors to the South.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has a tough job on his hand if he is to make history, though. His side will be missing a quartet of experienced names in Clint Dempsey, Carlos Bocanegra, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley.

Mexico (probable)

G: Ochoa

D: Torres Nilo, Rodriguez, Moreno, Meza

M: Barrera, Viniegra, Lugo, Zavala, Guardado

F: Hernandez

USA (probable)

G: Howard

D: Johnson, Cameron, Edu, Orozco Fiscal

M: Donovan, Beckerman, Jones, Torres, Beasley

F: Boyd

Prediction: Shorn of some valuable experience, the U.S. could struggle playing in the intimidating surroundings of the Azteca. Particularly vulnerable could be a largely untested U.S. defense that may feature regular midfielder Maurice Edu. Riding a high from the country's recent success Mexico should get the victory.
